Heading Northeast from Lisbon and driving through Portugal is a day to explore the central region of Portugal, starting with a visit to Idanha-a-Velha, Penha Garcia, Monsanto and Castelo Novo. All of them are included on the route of the Historical Villages except for Penha Garcia. It’s a day to learn about the history of this secular villages, mainly the Templar period (12th and 14th century). At Penha Garcia you can take a swim at a beautiful fluvial beach and trail along the watermills.
This day sleepover will be at Castelo Novo area.

Coming from Castelo Novo area and continuing your road trip, the first visit is Sortelha Historical village followed by a visit to Belmonte, a village that has a lot of interest, and very connected with the jewish community in Portugal and the land of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Portuguese Navigator that discovered Brazil in 1500. At the end of the day you head towards Linhares da Beira to spend the night.

To diversify our self drive tour, this day is dedicated to nature, you are now on the slope of Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in continental Portugal. Start the day with a visit to Folgosinho and head towards Sabugueiro (the highest village in Portugal). After Sabugueiro, and starting from Lagoa Comprida you have a trail (10 km) to Covão dos Conchos, that we totally advise you to do.
After the trail follow your journey to the Tower (Highest point) and be amazed with the views (In the winter is even better because of the snow landscape).
From the tower pass by Covão dos Bois and stop at Covão D’Ametade, an enchanted place where you can trail, swim or just relax.

The last day of your road trip, is a more relaxed one, we advise you to take advantage of the special places of Serra da Estrela and do some trails in the forest or swim in one of the fluvial beaches, just relax and enjoy the nature.
After leaving Serra da Estrela you follow towards another historical village and one of the best preserved Piodão, here you have some trails and one fluvial beach to enjoy and relax.
To finish your Portugal roadtrip you have a long drive ahead of you (3.5 hours) to return to Lisbon, you can stop at Penacova to have a swim at Reconquinho Beach (Mondego river) or just have some delicious pastries at Turismo coffee shop.
